WWEE Success Stories: Kyt

"Motivated and Determined"

"If you're ever in an unfamiliar city or state, and in need of assistance, look in the white pages, under W for women. This was truly one of the best pieces of advice Kyt never had to use until she moved to Tacoma, WA in 2004.

Immediately after her graduation from WWEE’s REACH Plus class, Judy "Kyt" Williams became an intern at WWEE. During her internship at WWEE Kyt organized a total makeover of the WWEE classroom, spoke to dozens of groups on behalf of WWEE, and assisted the WWEE staff in the office. A true go-getter, Kyt soon launched her own business and began volunteering in a variety of ways in the community.

So, why did an ambitious and talented person like Kyt need WWEE’s services? It all started with what Kyt characterized as her "dark age". While she was dealing with undiagnosed hyperthyroidism, Kyt became depressed after losing her good health status, job, home insurance, and her overall lifestyle. Frustrated with a series of misdiagnoses and the loss of her financial stability her mind wandered to all sorts of scary possibilities. A single mother of a young son who had chronic behavioral concerns, she felt as if her world was crumbling.

Kyt was finally diagnosed with Graves Disease and with medication and determination she began to embrace relatively good physical health again. Emotionally and financially Kyt felt a major void and sought out help. She remembered the advice a friend gave her more than a decade ago, and picked up the white pages and found WWEE.

While in the computer class portion of the program, she wrote several business plans for her family business and before graduation began implementing ideas. In December of 2004, 6 months after graduation from WWEE, Kyt opened "One of a Find Gift Baskets", became an Accomplished Toastmaster, volunteered in the classroom teaching her own mini-course about lifestyle choices called "Success for Less". She also worked as a Loaned Executive with United Way of Pierce County during their 2006-2007 year.

Now Kyt has developed a blog, webisodes and a cable program called "The Green Swing", about recyling and repurposing, and is transitioning her gift basket business to become "green" as well. Kyt's son is due to graduate from Tacoma Community College's "Running Start" program and from High School in 2010. In May 2008 he presented Governor Gregoire with a vase he made as a glass sculptor. He too developed a new resolve as he watched his mother move from depression to determination.

Kyt is motivated, determined, and excited. Motivated because she's not just on the right track, but on the right train, determined because she recognizes endless possibilities and excited because of the opportunity to say "I am a WWEE graduate.
