Housing Bridge to Self-Sufficiency

Housing Bridge to Self-Sufficiency (HBSS) is a joint project of the Martin Luther King Housing Development Association and WWEE. The objective of the program is to reduce the dependency of low-income, homeless (or near homeless) families on government assistance and to provide them with Section 8 Rental Assistance. The program also helps them to obtain the education, employment, business, and social skills necessary to achieve self-sufficiency.

Participants in HBSS learn about the following:
  • Goal setting
  • Career planning and development
  • Positive attitude
  • Self-esteem building
  • Conflict resolution
  • Workplace behavior
  • Productive work habits
  • Communication skills
  • Barrier identification and resolution
The services that can be provided through HBSS include the following:
  • Section 8 subsidized housing assistance
  • One-on-one case management
  • Supportive services
  • Access to community resources
  • Assistance with employment-related expenses
  • Resume and cover letter development
  • Access to computer skills training
  • Individual job search assistance
  • Professional wardrobe assistance
  • Follow-up support
To be eligible for the HBSS program, you must be homeless or near homeless (paying over 50% of your income to rent) and enrolled in some form of educational, job search, or job readiness program (like WWEE).
